National Aviation Day and Photography Day ✈️📸 — 3 ways to make them count

Hey Reader,

Two easy-to-miss "holidays" land next week, both on Wednesday, August 19: National Aviation Day and World Photography Day. Neither needs a lesson plan, just a little curiosity. ✈️📸

Here are 3 ways to make them count:

✈️ 1. Build a flying machine for National Aviation Day
National Aviation Day was established in 1939 and lands every year on Orville Wright's birthday. Fold a few paper airplane designs and test which one flies farthest, or talk about how wing shape creates lift. An easy on-ramp into physics, engineering, and the history of flight.

📸 2. Go on a photo scavenger hunt for World Photography Day
World Photography Day marks the 1839 announcement of the daguerreotype, one of the first practical photography processes. Hand your kids a camera or phone and send them on a scavenger hunt for shapes, colors, or textures in nature. Talk about how a camera captures light — a five-minute detour into science and art.

🔭 3. Do a Wonder Explorer mission and snap a photo along the way
Late-summer evenings are still perfect for outdoor curiosity. Launch a Wonder Explorer mission any night this week and let your kids lead the way — it's built for exactly this kind of unplanned discovery.
