Set the Stage: Creating a Homeschool Space that Inspires Learning

Hello Reader!

Have you noticed that your environment plays a big part in your mood and your ability to focus? Most of us have a favorite "spot" to sit and reflect, or a "work area" where we feel better able to tackle our daily tasks. Children are no different. Creating an environment that inspires learning is a great way to help make the learning journey easier.

This is not going to look the same for everyone. Some kids work very well sprawled out on the floor, or sitting on their bed; others really need to have a desk in a quiet place to work. Consider your unique child when deciding on a workspace. Where do they prefer to be, and are they able to get things done while there? We may think that a desk is the best option for everyone, but if the child is uncomfortable it can make focusing harder. One of the benefits of home, is they can work in whatever way is comfortable for them- as long as they're getting their work done!

When it comes to toys that inspire learning and creativity, the loudest, most modern gadgets aren't always better. Especially for younger kids, Montessori-type toys are great for inspiring open-ended play and imaginative learning. Busy Boards are often a big hit with littles (and can be a helpful activity to have on hand to pull out while doing school with an older child); magnet toys provide endless fun and encourage children to test the limits of their creativity and of gravity.

Think about the kinds of things that interest and excite your child. Surround them with fun problems to solve and new things to try, or show them new ways to use old things. You can find more ideas for creating your homeschooling space, here. Ultimately, the goal is to find the spot where each person is most comfortable and can be the most productive.

Have fun!

Most often, that includes deciding on a curriculum. How do you even begin to choose? It's helpful to do a little bit of research before committing to one specific curriculum option. This can take some time, but we've tried to cut down on some of the leg work for you by outlining the 7 Primary Homeschooling...
