A Modern Approach to Education: Keep Things Simple by Focusing on the End Goal
Published 29 days ago • 3 min read
Hi Reader!
One of the most overwhelming parts of homeschooling, is feeling the need to do ALL the things all the time. And not just that our kids need to be exposed to subjects, it's easy to feel like they only count as "school" if we are the ones actively sitting down and teaching a lesson on the subject. This doesn't have to be the case. In fact, studies show that children learn much faster and more effectively through play. When parents are able to fully embrace this idea, it takes a lot of the pressure off of them to perform certain tasks and allows them to relax and enjoy the process more.
It also helps to have an end goal in mind. What is it specifically that you are wanting your child to be able to do by the time you are done teaching them? Is the goal for them to go to college? What then?
More and more professionals are speaking out in favor of experience and life skills over college education. Elon Musk, for instance, has said that he believes college is mostly "for fun" and to "prove that you can do chores," but that it isn't essential for learning and isn't indicative of career success. Other big names who share his position include: Peter Thiel (Thiel Fellowship), Tim Cook (Apple CEO), Sundar Pichai (Google/Alphabet CEO), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), and Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad). Companies such as Palantir and IBM have actually de-emphasized the need for college and focus on hiring based on demonstrated ability.
"I read books and talked to people. I mean that's kind of how one learns anything. There are lots of great books out there and lots of smart people."
-Elon Musk
In a nutshell, it is the homeschool child's time to shine! Not because their parents have effectively mimicked a failing school system, but because homeschool students have unmatched opportunities to learn life and social skills, independent thinking, and develop talents that are outside the scope of the traditional school system.
In some respects, "less is more" is a good mantra to have for the homeschool parent. Once children have a strong foundation in basic reading, writing, and math, then can really be let loose to use their skills in meaningful ways to explore all of their interests. This isn't to say that their education should be completely undirected, but encouraging an attitude of curiosity and independent motivation will be invaluable as children grow up and begin their own careers, beyond school.
This also isn't meant to discredit the value of college for some students, depending on their aspirations. But, not every child has to go to college; it doesn't have to be a part of the plan. The goal should be to equip the student to make a good, strategic decision for themselves about their future when the time comes, by starting with the fundamental skills and habits when they are young- inside and outside the classroom.

Can we homeschool and work? How much is it going to cost anyway? Thankfully, there are more and more resources becoming available all the time to help support homeschool families. Texas...

Hi Reader! 2026 is here! (That still sounds a little weird...) Many people have reflected on the past year and made goals for this new year that's just started.
